Annie Brassey Tea & Talk

  • Starcroft Farm Cabins Battle, England, TN33 9DT United Kingdom (map)

Annie Brassey arrived home from her family’s 11-month voyage around the world in 1877. Shortly after, she flung open the doors of her grand French-style château in Catsfield and invited everyone to see what she had collected.

We invite you to this informal talk by Sarah French, with tea and cake, to hear more about the works of art, the ‘curiosities’ and Brassey’s many guests, who danced on the billiard table, got insulted by the parrot and even broke a leg…

During the event you'll also have the chance to take a look at Starcroft Farm Cabins' Victorian-themed cabin, Catherine, inspired by the women adventurers and botanists of the day.

Sarah French is a cultural heritage researcher who has written her PhD thesis on the collections of Annie Brassey, as part of a CHASE partnership between the University of Sussex and Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.

Parking is available on site. Please be aware this is an outdoor event and therefore is weather permitting. Some walking on uneven terrain will be required.
